Your Great Idea-Tips to Plan Your Sewn Product

New products are brought into existence when someone is able to solve a problem specific to that industry. The sewn products and children’s wear industry offers innovative textiles and fabrications that play a large role in the creation of apparel and in some cases an entire brand.

Take for example “wicking or cooling” technologies that are integrated into the yarns of knits and woven fabrics to keep you cool and dry. Or an “anti-microbial” feature that inhibits unhealthy compounds from forming within a fabric. Although we may associate children’s sewn products with the Fashion or Apparel Industry, let’s not forget that there are hundreds of related industries that produce sewn products.

What if you want to create a single product that doesn’t represent an apparel item? Take for example the children’s accessory industry where thousands of sewn products are in great demand to serve the needs of newborns or toddlers at home or even hospitals; from warming blankets, sleep aids and protective garments to name a few. Some of those items could easily have started out as a children’s sewn product and not a line of clothing.

Almost every body part has a related sewn product to solve a problem; broken arms need slings, shoulder replacements may need cooling pads, strained necks may need a neck brace, legs may need compression tights, and severe injuries require harnesses and lifts. If helping people at this level is your personal mission, this could be a natural path for you to create an innovative sewn product.

Think about all the industries and related sewn products that we need or use every day specifically for children; diaper covers, crib sheets, blankets, wraps, tote bags, back packs, car seat accessories, towels, hats, and hair bows. How about swimwear, beach towels, beach totes, hiking gear, artist/craft aprons, toy carriers and soft toys…..the list is endless.

The ideas will begin to flow as you open your mind to the vast array of opportunities where a sewn product would be beneficial. Where you see a problem, you may have the perfect solution.

How will it help mankind? Can I make it better or add something to it to make it unique? Write it down, capture your idea in photos or start a notebook of rough sketches. This is the first step in product creation.
